INSTALLATION
On the James Discovers Math cd there is a folder labeled Put These in System Folder. In this folder there are two additional folders, one of which applies to your Macintosh.
For PowerPC Macintoshes:
Open the folder entitled For PowerPC Macintoshes and drag Quicktime (version 2.1), Quicktime PowerPlug, Quicktime Musical Instruments, Sound, Sound Manager (version 3.1), and Thread Manager (see note below) onto your closed System Folder on your computer's hard drive. You will be prompted to click OK in order for these extensions and control panels to be placed in the correct area of the System Folder. After these items have been copied to the System Folder you must restart the Macintosh. Double-click on the James Discovers Math icon on the CD and you're all set to play!
For Non PowerPC Macintoshes:
Open the folder entitled For Non PowerPC Macintoshes and drag Quicktime (version 2.1), Quicktime Musical Instruments, Sound, and Sound Manager (version 3.1) onto your closed System Folder on your computer's hard drive. You will be prompted to click OK in order for these extensions and control panels to be placed in the correct area of the System Folder. After these items have been copied to the System Folder you must restart the Macintosh. Double-click on the James Discovers Math icon on the CD and you're all set to play!
MEMORY
For optimal performance and memory configuration, be sure to close all other applications before playing James Discovers Math.
POWERPC USERS
Thread Manager
PowerPC users running System 7.1 or 7.1.2 requires the Thread Manager extension included in the For PowerPC Macintoshes folder on the James Discovers Math CD. If you have updated the system using System Update 3.0 or are running System 7.5, the Thread Manager should already be present.
Memory Control Panel settings should be set so the Disk Cache is above 64K and Virtual Memory and Modern Memory Manager should be turned on.
POWER COMPUTING COMPUTERS
Power Computing's PowerPC computers using the PPC 601/120MHz chip cannot use Sound Manager 3.1 included on the James Discovers Math CD. Contact Power Computing or Apple for a copy of Sound Manager 3.0 until the System Software update is made available.
PRINTING
James Discovers Math was tested with a wide variety of printers and printer configurations. While we cannot anticipate every possible configuration, the notes below should provide the best possible printout for these situations encountered during our testing.
Background Printing
To minimize conflicts with printing priorities turn off Background Printing. To do this, select Chooser from the Apple menu. Click on the icon of your printer model in the chooser window, and then turn off Background Printing.
Epson Color Stylus
The default settings may produce a printout split into several pieces. If this occurs use the following settings for the best possible printout:
Select Best, Faster, or Presentation Best rather than Draft quality in the printer setup dialog box.
Imagewriter II
Printing with the standard Imagewriter driver produces only black and white prinouts. If you are using the MacPalette driver from MicroSpot you will get color printouts, but some printouts from the Face Game may contain small portions of the MacPalette status window in them. If a printjob is canceled from the Printer Setup dialog box or the Print dialog box, an error message will appear: "Printing is being terminated because of an error (Error -39)." You should be able to continue playing without consequence.
